Information About Propane:
Propane is a byproduct of the refining and processing of petroleum and natural gas. It has been used as a fuel since around 1911. Today it is used in a wide variety of applications including barbeques, vehicles, forklifts, buses, zambonis, campers, trailers, industrial, commercial, oilfield and home heating. Over 15 billion gallons of propane are consumed annually in the U.S. alone.
Propane and Natural Gas are the two main fuels used for these applications in Alberta. A few of the primary differences between propane and natural gas are:
- Natural gas is primarily delivered by pipeline to the end user while propane is delivered by truck.
When compressed, propane changes into a liquid which is much safer to transport and store.
- In many rural and remote applications propane can be set up more economically and quickly. A storage tank can simply be hauled in and set up to use propane where a natural gas application would require a pipeline to first be installed.
- While utilities such as natural gas and electricity have various monthly charges for the infrastructural components and services, propane does not. If you own your own tank all your pay for afterward is the actual fuel. At 5 Star propane delivery is included free to most areas.
